I think this one speaks for itself. But if you’re hard of hearing, just try it and see how it’s almost impossible, or unbearable. How ubiquitous is the ‘screen’ in modern life? How ‘screengrab’ really means the screen is grabbing your time and attention for …. a lot of the time, absolutely nothing. All that time we spend….not invest, but spend…on largely things with little or no return.
The Koan:
Don’t watch TV—not even the news—for a week. No screens! Any news you ingest is read in a paper, heard on the radio, or in conversation. No streaming series, no movies unless in a real theater.*
For one week quit even the stuff we love and think we need— like watching the Giants or 60 Minutes—go without it for a week. Read about it, ask others about what you ‘missed’.
*Yes, you can use the internet for work. But if it’s not work….get back to work—or sit up tall and take greater appreciation of the now.
What will you do with that time? Note that this is not a call for more productivity, although that may be an outcome. It’s more of a question mark put on the quotidian… what am I doing, Now?
Great idea. You mean... right now? This week. So much going on this week. I MUST monitor
